List of Common Terms and Abbreviations
This appendix goes over some of the common technical terms, abbreviations, and acronyms used through this report. Simple descriptions are given for terms and some acronyms and abbreviations where the definition is not plain. GENERAL TERMS Arc Flash Rating ............Used interchangeably with incident energy, arc flash hazard, cal/cm 2 . This is the amount of energy of the arc flash which determines how dangerous the equipment will be in the event of an arc flash. Coordination .................Refers to the verification that all protective devices such as fuses and circuit breakers to trip in the proper order. IEEE ............................... Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEEE 1584 ......................Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers standard that provides a method of calculating the incident energy of an arc flash event. MOM.............................Momentary Rating - Used on MV (over 1000V) equipment to determine asymmetrical short circuit on equipment and protective devices. NEC................................ National Electric Code NFPA ............................. National Fire Protection Agency NFPA 70E....................... National Fire Protection Agency code regarding electrical safety Nuisance Tripping .........Refers to a breaker tripping out of order which could cause equipment not having
problems to be forced offline by tripping an upstream breaker. An example of this would be a large motor causing the main breaker of a motor control center to trip instead of the individual motor breaker.
PPE ................................ Personal Protective Equipment Short Circuit ..................Amount of current that will be seen at equipment if there is a bolted fault (worst case). Can also be referred to as the bus bolted fault or Isc. Short Circuit Rating.......Rating of equipment to physically withstand the forces exerted in the event of a short circuit. SKM ............................... This is the modeling and calculation software used to evaluate the site.
